Why submit an extended abstract in BISS?

TDWG has had a successful partnership since 2017 with Pensoft Publishing to publish the journal Biodiversity Information Science and Standards (BISS). Each year, the Proceedings of TDWG conferences are published in BISS, including those held as multi-organisation events. We now offer the opportunity to have your abstract included in the open access Proceedings for this year. This is a benefit of your registration for the conference and acceptance of your presentation.

What is an extended abstract?

An extended abstract published in BISS is a peer-reviewed mini-paper designed to provide you with a value-added, easily citable snapshot of your work. You will submit it via Pensoft’s ARPHA writing tool.

It is not a verbatim repetition of the abstract submitted to the conference platform but must still represent the presentation accepted/given.

Extended abstracts allow you to:

enhance and lengthen your abstract from 1800 characters (≤300 words) on the conference platform to 6000 characters (900-1200 words)
Include figures, keywords, references, even supplementary materials
Link your slides, poster and the video of your presentation using the “media” tab
Link to your and co-authors ORCID records
Make use of a citable DOI that will be automatically assigned

How is the extended abstract different from my conference abstract?

The short conference abstract you have already submitted to the conference platform will only ever be visible to registered conference delegates. The short abstract will require a login to the conference platform for anyone to see it, and will not be publicly accessible. No DOI will be minted for individual abstracts submitted to the conference platform.The short conference abstract is ephemeral, not-citable, text only and not linked anywhere.

Eligibility

To be eligible for submission, the abstract must:

Be accepted for presentation at the TDWG conference in the current year,
Be scheduled for presentation / have been presented at the TDWG conference in the current year
Be presented by a registered attendee at the conference.

Cost

In most years, publication of the extended abstract is free provided the eligibility criteria above are met.

In some years, when TDWG meets with other organisations and societies, publishing the extended abstract is free for TDWG members only and a fee is charged to non-members. Check the conference website for the current year to confirm the charges this year.

Free and open access to your abstract in perpetuity via TDWG’s open access Pensoft journal, Biodiversity Information Science and Standards (BISS).
Automatic linking of your abstract to your author record via ORCID and/or Web of Science (Publons) ResearcherID.
A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) assigned to each abstract. This DOI is a unique, persistent, and citable reference that enables your abstract to be part of your publishing history above and beyond the conference proceedings.
Distribution of abstracts under the terms of Creative Commons attribution licenses, either CC BY 4.0 (default) or CC0 (by request).
At least two editors will review and may provide comments and feedback for each abstract.
Post-publication, readers can comment or ask questions within the Comment tab in the publication. Authors may also use the Comment tab for updates (see example here) or errata.
To prompt discoverability, all articles, including abstracts, are automatically harvested upon publication by a range of indexers, from AGRICOLA to ZDB.
You will get metrics about views, downloads, citations, and online mentions of your work.
Abstracts will be associated with the conference session in which they are presented.
